What is a Girl to Wear?

By Wendy Crawford

I somehow manage each morning to dress, after much thought about my outfit for the day. As a quadriplegic, multiple wardrobe changes isn’t always realistic nor an option, so your outfit must work in all temperatures and from day to evening. This is not an easy feat at the best of times and as of late, given the crazy weather here in the northeast, almost impossible!
Temperatures can fluctuate 30 degrees in one day so what is a girl to wear? Now is the time to put away the puffy coats and clunky boots and blossom while still being practical.  There are so many options this year so with some smart layering, chic AND practical is possible.
Start off with a basic T shirt that can stand alone, if you shed the top layers. If the forecast is slightly chilly, wear a long sleeve but if it looks like it could get really warm, wear a short sleeve or tank. Cotton T shirts are great but now there are also new fabrics like blends, modal or even bamboo that are silky soft which make it easier to slide a sweater over and aren’t bulky at all. Pick a bright colored cardigan or pullover that’s easy to remove if you start feeling warm.

Pair with your favorite bottoms like a pair of fun jeans. Denim has completely had a makeover this spring to the point it’s unrecognizable! Denim now comes in every color imaginable and even a multitude of prints – everything from subdued, watery florals to retro geometric prints. Don’t be afraid to mix and match colors!
Another layering option is to pull out a summer maxi dress then throw a cardigan or jacket over top which transitions well from day to night. Perfect for date night! Balance is important, so if you have a flowing bottom then make sure your top is fitted. (Note: the inverse is true, as well. If you are wearing a flowing top then go with a skinny leg pant or pencil skirt.)
I find that if my neck is cold then I’m cold so I always bring a scarf. Pack away the wools and darker colors and pull out the spring colors. A bright scarf can completely transform a boring outfit into a sophisticated European look without having to spend a lot of money.
If it’s a really chilly, consider a trench coat.  I’ve always wanted to wear one but found they didn’t work in the chair because they were too long until recently. Now cropped trenches are everywhere and work perfect in the chair. My favorite part is the belt – you can skip closing the buttons if they are a challenge for you and tie the belt. It’s easy on and off and defines your waist. Also, they don’t just come in basic beige anymore. You can find them in bold, exciting colors like Kelly green or yellow, sure to brighten a dreary day!
Lastly, I always keep in my bag, a hooded rain poncho purchased from the swanky, exclusive nearby grocery store for $3! It comes folded in a little pouch and can be quickly thrown on and will protect you, your outfit and chair. Throw on a funky pair of rain boots and you are covered from head to toe!
Spring is a time of renewal and rebirth so get out there and experience it. Rejuvenation is the best accessory of all. You will not only feel wonderful but look fabulous too!
